Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606, Leiden – Amsterdam, 1669), Reclining Female Nude (“La Negresse Couché”). Etching and drypoint on laid paper. (1658). 8.2 x 15.9 cm (sheet). Bartsch 205; White/Boon 203 III (of III); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 308 V (of VI). Provenance: Verso with an unidentified collector’s stamp (not in Lugt). A very fine impression of the fifth state (of six), printing darkly, with good contrasts and traces of burr in places. Trimmed on the platemark, just within the upper margin. Rembrandt devoted most of his later etchings to the theme of the female nude. They represent a highlight of his late work. His *Nude Lying Down* has been described by the Metropolitan Museum of Art as “one of Rembrandt’s most beautiful and understated works.” Created late in his career, the print reflects the extraordinary freedom and subtlety he had by then achieved in printmaking. – Mounted overall on fine Japanese paper, apparently at an early date. Otherwise in good condition. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
