Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606, Leiden – Amsterdam, 1669), Christ at Emmaus: The Larger Plate. Etching and drypoint on laid paper. (1654). 22.9 x 17.6 cm (sheet). Bartsch 87; White/Boon 87 III (of III); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 283 IV (of V). A very good, well-inked impression of the fourth state, with very fine hatching enhancing the shadows on the right side of the table just below the tablecloth and with fine plate tone throughout. In the same year that Rembrandt created his small etchings depicting the childhood of Christ, he also produced four larger prints depicting key moments from Christ’s life. Among them is *The Supper at Emmaus*, which captures the moment when two disciples recognize the resurrected Christ as he breaks bread with them. Their emotional response is clear—one raises his arms in shock, the other folds his hands in prayer. Christ, seated in the center, radiates light, symbolizing spiritual revelation. In contrast, the innkeeper in the foreground remains unaware of the miracle, still in darkness. With wide margins, up to 1 cm around the platemark. – Paper is lightly stained by age and has isolated light foxing. The reverse side has scattered ink lines; otherwise, it is in very good condition. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
