Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606, Leiden – Amsterdam, 1669), Nude Man Seated on the Ground with One Leg Extended. Etching and engraving on laid paper. (1646). 9.7 x 15.4 cm (sheet). Bartsch 196; White/Boon 196 II (of II); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 234 II (of III). Provenance: Unidentified collector’s mark (not in Lugt). A fine, delicate lifetime impression of New Hollstein’s second state (of three); showing the shading of the white strip on the forearm. With a narrow margin around the plate mark on two sides; cut just inside the plate mark at the lower edge; trimmed to the image on the right. Rembrandt probably had more apprentices than any other Dutch painter of the 17th century. In his *Groote Schouburgh*, Arnold Houbraken describes an attic on Amsterdam’s Bloemgracht that Rembrandt rented for his pupils to draw and paint from life. Drawings from Rembrandt’s circle in the Albertina, Vienna, suggest that the master himself also participated in these studies of the nude. In 1646, three etchings, including the present seated male nude, were produced after the same model. – Trimmed along the right-hand edge of the image. The corners have been retouched, and the tip of the upper right corner has been redrawn. Two smoothed diagonal creases in the upper left-hand corner. A small, careful restoration in the light background. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
