Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606, Leiden – Amsterdam, 1669), Self-Portrait with a Cap Pulled Forward. Etching with touches of drypoint on wove paper. (c. 1630). 6.1 x 5.4 cm (sheet). Bartsch 319; White/Boon 319 VI (of VI); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 71 X (of X). A fine, later impression of this very rare self-portrait, with inky plate edges and wide margins. Created circa 1630, *Self-Portrait with a Cap Pulled Forward* is one of the small-scale self-portraits Rembrandt produced early in his career. This intimate image depicts the young artist up close, his lowered cap partially obscuring his face and transforming the likeness into a subtle study of shadow and character. – The sheet has a few minor foxing spots. There is a slight crease in the paper along the left edge of the plate. The reverse side shows traces of an old mounting, minor surface abrasions, and a small stain. Otherwise in good condition. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
