Hans Baldung, known as Grien (1484/85 Schwäbisch Gmünd – Strasbourg 1545), Group of Seven Horses. Woodcut on laid paper, watermark “Crossbow” (similar to Briquet 731). (1534). 21.1 x 31.2 cm (sheet). Bartsch 56 and Hollstein 238. A very fine, black impression, printed sharply and evenly, trimmed to or on the borderline. In 1534, Hans Baldung produced three woodcuts of equestrian subjects unlike anything else in his oeuvre. Both their subject matter and compositions are highly unusual and without obvious precedent. While horses were traditionally regarded as noble animals carrying warriors into battle, they could also serve as symbols of lust and unbridled desire, and it is this more primal aspect of their nature that Baldung explores here. – The borderline shows occasional small losses and a few small brown spots. The upper and lower left corners have been repaired, with associated pen-and-ink additions. A restored area at the center of the lower edge. The reverse side has a smoothed central vertical fold. Otherwise in good condition. Taxation: subject to regular taxation (VAT: Regular Taxation).
