Albrecht Dürer (1471 – Nuremberg – 1528), *The Crucifixion*, from: *The Large Passion*. Woodcut on laid paper, watermark: Bull’s Head with Serpent and Cross (Meder 81). (c. 1498). 38.5 x 27.8 cm (sheet). Bartsch 11; Meder 120 I (of III f); Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 161 I (of III f). Provenance: Henri de Triqueti (1802–1874), Paris, with his collector’s mark (Lugt 1304); Eberhard W. Kornfeld Collection, Bern, with the collector’s stamp on the reverse (Lugt 913b). Plate 8 from: The Large Passion. A fine, richly inked Meder proof impression, predating the 1511 Latin text edition, printed evenly and strongly, with great clarity and definition, allowing the extraordinary subtlety and detail of the finely carved woodblock to be fully appreciated. For impressions printed prior to the text edition, Dürer used a much finer paper, which allowed the delicate details of the woodblock to print with exceptional precision. Trimmed to the borderline. – The small breaks in the borderline, already noted by Meder in early impressions, have been carefully retouched. There are unobtrusive restorations at the upper left and right edges. Otherwise in excellent condition. Very rare in this early state. Taxation: regelbesteuert (VAT: Regular Taxation).
