Martin Schongauer (c. 1450, Colmar – Breisach, 1491), *The Crucifixion*, from: *The Passion*. Engraving on laid paper. (c. 1470–1482). 16.3 x 11.5 cm (sheet). Bartsch 17; Lehrs 27; The New Hollstein 27; Falk/Hirthe 27. Provenance: Unidentified, initials “kk” on the reverse (not in Lugt); Dr. Ernst Hauswedell & Ernst Nolte, Hamburg, auction 213, July 2, 1976, lot 227. A very fine print with lovely tonal balance, trimmed to or just outside the borderline. Lehrs is aware of a total of about 50 prints. Saint John is depicted opposite five female figures, only two of whom are physically visible. The other three largely disappear behind them or blend into the deep shadows of the landscape. Christ appears stretched out; the mourning women are calm and composed, showing little emotion. The static composition of the landscape also suggests that this is one of the earliest prints from the Passion series. – Verso with remnants and traces of previous mounting; the upper corners on the back show paper thinning. There is a faint stain in the upper right corner; otherwise, the print is in good condition. Taxation: subject to regular taxation (VAT: Regular Taxation).
