Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606, Leiden – Amsterdam, 1669), *The Circumcision in the Stable*. Etching on laid paper, watermark: Arms of Amsterdam (cf. Hinterding, variant G-a). (1654). 10 x 14.9 cm (sheet). Bartsch 47; White/Boon 47 I (of II); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 280 II (of V). A very fine lifetime impression of New Hollstein’s second state, with narrow margins around the platemark. This work is one of six scenes from the infancy and childhood of Christ etched by Rembrandt in 1654. Unusually, Rembrandt depicts the Circumcision not in the Temple but in a stable, lending the scene an intimate, domestic character. The first state, distinguished by its sharp plate corners, is extremely rare, with only two known impressions. – A small area of compression in the paper in the upper left corner; otherwise in very good condition. Taxation: regelbesteuert (VAT: Regular Taxation).
