Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606, Leiden – Amsterdam, 1669), Christ at Emmaus: The Smaller Plate. Etching and drypoint on laid paper. (1634). 10.4 x 7.5 cm (sheet). Bartsch 88; White/Boon 88; Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 129, only this state. Provenance: Alcide Donnadieu (after 1781–1861), London, with his handwritten collector’s mark on the reverse (Lugt 97 and 107); Charles Blanc (1813–1882), with the inscription on the reverse: ‘Souvenir offert à Mr. Ch. Blanc 4 Nov./51.’ A very fine, early impression of New Hollstein’s only state, with the delicate drypoint lines in the rays of the halo still clearly visible and with traces of foul biting beneath the table, characteristic of the earliest impressions. Trimmed on the platemark. The plate was lost at an early date, and impressions are consequently rare. Nowell-Usticke lists the etching as “R+” (rare). – With a few minor foxing spots. On the reverse, there is a small area of paper thinning at the lower right edge and old mounting strips. The reverse side of the sheet shows minimal rubbing along the edges; otherwise, it is in good condition. Taxation: subject to regular taxation (VAT: Regular Taxation).
