Anton Kern (1709 Tetschen – 1747 Dresden), The Annunciation. Chalk, ink, washed and highlighted in white on handmade paper. Approx. 42.5 x 29.5 cm. This composition is based on an altarpiece by Giovanni Battista Pittoni (1687–1767), which was commissioned shortly before 1730 for St. Mary’s Basilica in Kraków and was part of a five-part series intended to adorn the side altars of the nave. Kern’s early works show a strong influence from Pittoni, of whose work he made numerous copies. Kern’s drawings and paintings often resemble those of his master so closely that they were mistakenly attributed to him. Provenance: Charles Rogers (1711–1784), London (L. 625); Hans Calmann (1899–1982), London, 1960; Himmelheber Collection; Private collection, Baden-Württemberg. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
