Peter Candid (Workshop) (c. 1548 Bruges – Munich 1628), The Annunciation. Ink, washed on handmade paper. Approx. 18 x 25 cm. In this drawing, the motif of the Annunciation is incorporated into a spandrel above a door. This motif was frequently found above church doors or the central east window of churches in the Middle Ages and symbolizes the believer’s path to salvation through participation in the celebration at the altar, which is located along the church’s central axis, either in front of or behind the image of the Annunciation. The motif echoes the predella painting of the former high altar of Munich’s Frauenkirche, which Peter Candid signed and dated 1620. Provenance: Richard Tüngel Collection (1893–1970), Ahrensburg; Arnoldi-Livie Gallery, Munich; Private collection, Southern Germany. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
