Julius Sergius von Klever (1850, Dorpat – St. Petersburg, 1924), The Herbalist’s Hut under a Full Moon. Oil on canvas. 1907. Approx. 63 x 99 cm. Signed and dated lower right. Julius Sergius von Klever is considered one of the most important masters of Russian and German-Baltic landscape painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works are characterized by an unmistakable, often melancholic and mysterious atmosphere. In “The Herbalist’s Hut in the Full Moon,” Klever depicts a deep winter forest landscape at twilight. A narrow path, streaked with deep shadows, guides the viewer’s gaze past gnarled, barren tree trunks toward a small, solitary hut at the edge of the forest, from whose window a warm, golden light streams out. A solitary figure moves laboriously through the snow toward the refuge. The scene is dominated by the deep blue of the evening sky, where the full moon rises behind the treetops and bathes the snow-covered landscape in a cold, mystical light.
