Max Emanuel Ainmiller (1807 – Munich – 1870), Interior of Westminster Abbey. Oil on canvas. 1843. Approx. 100 x 74 cm. Signed and dated lower right. After training in Friedrich Gärtner’s class for architecture and ornamentation in Munich, the artist devoted himself to stained glass and the depiction of (primarily sacred) architecture. During his 1843 trip to Great Britain, he visited Westminster Abbey, whose interior he frequently depicted as a subject both that same year and in the years that followed. This work is the first known painting featuring this motif and marks the beginning of this significant body of work. With an eye for architectural detail and superb use of light, the depiction exudes a sacred and peaceful atmosphere. Provenance: Neumeister, Munich, September 23, 2015, Lot 266; Private collection, Southern Germany. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
