Johann Georg von Dillis (1759, Gmain near Schwindkirchen – Munich, 1841), Isola di Sora in Southern Lazio. Oil on paper. (Circa 1830/32). Approx. 19.5 x 26.5 cm. This dynamic oil study was created during one of Johann Georg von Dillis’s later trips to Italy around 1830/32 and depicts the famous town of Isola di Sora, a mountain village in southern Lazio known for its paper production. Dillis had already visited the area in 1805 and noted in a sketchbook that here one finds “nature in the style of Poussin or Dughet.” With great immediacy and, at the same time, an extraordinarily nuanced use of color, the artist captures the landscape in an evening atmosphere directly on site on paper. Dillis’s oil studies rank among the finest works produced by early plein air painting and stand up well to comparison with the most significant English and French artists of his time.
