Georg Heinrich Crola (real name Croll) (1804, Dresden – Ilsenburg, 1879), Evening at Gmund on Lake Tegernsee. Oil on paper mounted on wood. (1834). Approx. 31 x 44 cm. Signed lower left. Handwritten title and date on a label on the reverse. This atmospheric evening landscape was likely painted on site at a bend in the Mangfall River near Gmund am Tegernsee. Here, the artist depicts a wooded riverside scene with a fisherman in the finest shades of color—a level of detail that can only be captured through direct study of nature. This is further supported by the technique—oil on handmade paper—which the artist later mounted onto wood. The years Crol spent in Munich from 1830 to 1838 were of decisive importance for his artistic development, and Munich landscape painting, in turn, was influenced by the young Dresden artist, who, as a student of Johann Clausen Dahl and Caspar David Friedrich, brought a touch of Dresden Romanticism to the South German art scene. Provenance: Dr. Schleinitz, Leipzig (in the 19th century); private collection, Hesse. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
