François Habert (active c. 1650), Still Life with Flowers, a Wooden Box, Grapes, and a Chalice. Oil on wood. Approx. 49 x 65.5 cm. On the reverse is the mark of the panel maker Melchior de Bout (active 1625–1658), whose panels were used by both Flemish and French artists. Little is known about his life; among other things, it is unclear whether he was French or Flemish. Habert’s paintings—of which only a handful are known today—range from smaller, more understated still lifes to large-scale, sumptuous table scenes featuring elaborately decorated fabrics, food, and objects. Provenance: Private collection, southern Germany; Private collection, southern Germany (inherited from the aforementioned). Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
