German, Portrait of a Patrician Woman. Oil on canvas, with relining. (Late 16th century). Approx. 86 x 65 cm. Against a dark background, the unknown lady appears in a austere black gown with fur-trimmed sleeves and a finely patterned bonnet. Precious fabrics, jewelry, and her hands—adorned with rings and calmly folded—attest to her high social status. Painted toward the end of the 16th century, this portrait follows the tradition of South German patrician portraiture. An earlier attribution to Hans Mielich points to this artistic circle. Provenance: Private collection, Düsseldorf; Private collection, Lower Saxony. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
