Dutch, Winter Landscape with Skaters. Oil on wood. (Early 17th century). Approx. 33 x 49.5 cm. This exquisitely executed oil painting on wood panel is entirely in the tradition of the famous winter scenes by the Brueghel dynasty and Hendrick Avercamp. Against a wintery backdrop of a village and river, a richly detailed panorama of everyday life in wintertime Holland during the Golden Age unfolds. The composition captivates with its atmospheric sense of depth beneath a low-hanging, silver-gray cloudy sky. Numerous figures, characterized by sharp brushstrokes, bring the frozen water to life: townspeople in elegant dark clothing stroll along the shore, while in the center, exuberant ice skaters, sledders, and playing children fill the ice. Elaborately rendered, bare trees in the foreground, along with a stone arch bridge, masterfully structure the pictorial space. The work is distinguished by a subtle color modulation of earthy brown tones and cool shades that perfectly convey the biting cold of winter. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia (in the family for several generations). Taxation: subject to margin scheme (VAT: Margin Scheme).
