Dutch, Portrait of an Elderly Lady Wearing a Bonnet. Oil on canvas, with relining. (Second half of the 17th century) Approx. 75 x 61 cm. This striking portrait depicts an elderly woman in dark clothing with a white collar against a deep, dark background. Her strictly frontal pose, her calm gaze directed at the viewer, and her hands clasped in front of her body lend the subject a dignified yet immediate presence. Particular attention should be paid to the lifelike rendering of the face, marked by age, and the carefully modeled hands. The restrained color palette and focused lighting emphasize the physiognomy, thus following a key tradition of 17th-century Dutch portrait painting. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia (in the family for several generations). Taxation: subject to margin scheme (VAT: Margin Scheme).
