Dutch, Adoration of the Magi. Oil on wood, paneled. (16th century). Approx. 53.5 x 39 cm. This striking depiction portrays the Adoration of the Christ Child by the Three Wise Men. At the center of the densely composed scene, Mary sits with the Child resting on her lap in a suggested stable setting. Guided by the Star of Bethlehem, the Three Wise Men and their entourage surround her and present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They represent the three continents known in the 15th century—Europe, Asia, and Africa—and also symbolize three different stages of life. A large entourage animates the background and draws the eye out into the expansive landscape. The composition draws on Martin Schongauer’s copperplate engraving “The Adoration of the Magi,” ca. 1470. Particular attention is paid to the nuanced rendering of the precious fabrics, the gold brocade, and the armor. The rich palette of reds, greens, and golds lends the composition a festive atmosphere. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia (in the family for several generations). Taxation: subject to margin scheme (VAT: Margin Scheme).
