Albrecht Dürer (attributed) (1471 – Nuremberg – 1528), The Twelve-Year-Old Jesus in the Temple. Oil on wood. (16th century). Approx. 115 x 67.5 cm. The painting depicts the biblical episode from the Gospel of Luke in which Mary and Joseph find Jesus, who had remained behind in the temple, teaching among the scribes. The multi-figure depiction shows the young Jesus seated at a desk beneath a canopy, set within a strikingly staged Renaissance architectural setting. The composition is a reference to Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut “The Twelve-Year-Old Jesus in the Temple,” circa 1503, Sheet 16 from the “Life of Mary.” Similarities are particularly evident in the architectural framing with round arches and crossbeams, as well as in the stage-like, tiered arrangement of figures surrounding the centrally emphasized Christ. The adaptation and painterly development of Dürer’s famous woodcut demonstrate the significance and lasting influence of his printmaking on European painting. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia (in the family for several generations). Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
