A collection of financial and estate records of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich and “White” émigré organizations A group of financial and estate records of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich and White émigré organizations French- and Russian-language accounting, financial, and estate records dating primarily from the 1920s and 1930s, relating to the personal finances and property of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich and the administration of his estate—including Château de Choigny—following his death. The collection comprises accounts, financial statements, receipts, estate records, and related documentation, along with financial records concerning White émigré organizations in France. Much of the material is handwritten and provides a detailed account of the financial administration of the Grand Duke’s estate and the activities of Russian émigré organizations in France during the interwar period. Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, France During the 1920s, Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich’s household in exile relied on careful administration to manage its increasingly limited financial resources. Detailed accounts were kept of household expenditures, including payments for the upkeep of the Château de Choigny, while correspondence concerning loans, debts, and other financial matters reflects the constant effort required to manage the family’s affairs. The surviving records include telegrams, letters, receipts, and financial statements documenting the day-to-day expenses of the Grand Duke’s household. The Grand Duke also received numerous requests for financial assistance from Russian émigrés, former officers, widows, refugees, and charitable organizations, many of whom continued to regard him as a patron and protector despite his own constrained circumstances. These records illustrate both the financial difficulties faced by the exiled Imperial family and the Grand Duke’s enduring symbolic importance within the Russian émigré community throughout the decade.
