A series of letters concerning the Anastasia Tchaikovskaya affair and the death of Empress Maria Feodorovna A group of correspondence concerning the Anastasia Tchaikovskaya affair and the death of Empress Maria Feodorovna A collection of correspondence and related material concerning the claims of Anna Tchaikovskaya—later known as Anna Anderson—to be Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna, along with reports and communications regarding the death of Empress Maria Feodorovna. Dating primarily from the 1920s and 1930s, the material includes correspondence addressed to Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich and communications regarding Tchaikovskaya’s claims, including requests for financial assistance made on her behalf. The correspondence reflects the controversy surrounding the identity of the alleged survivor of the Imperial Family and the differing attitudes toward her claims within the Russian émigré community and among members of the former Imperial household. Also included are reports and notices concerning the death of Empress Maria Feodorovna, providing a broader record of the ongoing concerns and networks of the Russian émigré community in the years following the Revolution. Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, France Correspondence preserved among the Grand Duke’s papers indicates that he received reports and letters concerning Anastasia Tchaikovskaya, including requests for financial support made on her behalf. These communications reveal both the persistent efforts of her supporters to gain recognition and assistance from prominent Romanov figures and the widespread uncertainty surrounding her identity. Rather than being viewed as the miraculous survivor of the Imperial Family, she was often regarded with suspicion, and many émigrés questioned the inconsistencies in her story and her inability to convincingly identify people and events from Grand Duchess Anastasia’s life. Decades later, DNA testing would conclusively demonstrate that Anna Anderson was not Grand Duchess Anastasia but was most likely a Polish factory worker named Franziska Schanzkowska. Around the same time that rumors about the “fake” Anastasia were spreading through the Russian émigré community, Empress Maria Feodorovna—the Dowager Empress of Russia and mother of Emperor Nicholas II—was living in exile in her native Denmark. Unlike many members of the Romanov family, she long refused to believe reports that her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren had been murdered by the Bolsheviks, clinging to the hope that at least some members of the Imperial Family had survived. Her position lent particular significance to claims such as those made by Anna Anderson, although Maria Feodorovna herself never accepted Anderson as her granddaughter. The Dowager Empress died on October 13, 1928, in Hvidøre, near Copenhagen, at the age of eighty. Her death marked the passing of one of the last major figures of the old imperial court and was deeply felt throughout the Russian émigré community. Numerous memorial services were held across Europe, and messages of condolence were exchanged among members of the Romanov family and White émigré organizations. For many exiles, her death symbolized the end of an era and the further fading of the direct connection to pre-revolutionary Imperial Russia.
