JORN, ASGER (BORN JØRGENSEN, OLUF ASGER) (Veirum 1914 – 1973 Aarhus): Untitled Oil on canvas Signed and dated (19)55 upper left 99x79 cm, framed Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland. Exhibition: Asger Jorn. Un artiste libre, Fondation de l’Hermitage, Lausanne, June 22 – October 21, 2012, No. 62 (label on the reverse; with full-page illustration in the exhibition catalog, p. 90). The painting offered here is registered in the archives of the Museum Jorn, Silkeborg, under number 97a. In the 1950s, the Danish artist Asger Jorn was among the pioneers of postwar abstraction, which moved away from Surrealism and toward a freer, more intuitive artistic style. Jorn was a co-founder of the CoBrA artist group, whose spontaneous and highly gestural visual language is also evident in this work. This untitled composition dates from a highly productive creative phase in the Danish artist’s career, during which he significantly further developed his expressive formal language. The composition exemplifies this through its multi-layered, dynamically structured color-field composition, in which figurative elements and abstract forms intertwine. Vibrant colors contrast with dark tones and areas set off in light hues, creating the energetic tension characteristic of Jorn’s work in the mid-1950s. The powerful brushstrokes and the dense, rhythmic lines bring the painting to life and convey the impulsive, almost eruptive character of his artistic expression.
