MAESTRO DELLA MADONNA LAZZARONI (active in Florence around 1500) Attributed to: Maestà Tempera and gold paint on wood 72x34 cm (image dimensions) The work on offer is the central panel of what was likely a three-part altarpiece from the 14th century. Clearly visible on the reverse are the imprints of former hinges—two on each side—where two wing doors were once attached. These wings were opened only on special occasions, such as holidays, thus revealing the picture surface of the work on offer, which otherwise remained concealed. Stylistically, the work can be dated to Florence in the late Trecento or early Quattrocento. The painter was clearly influenced by the Florentine Jacopo di Cione. Based on the distinctive rendering of the faces and the graceful postures of the figures, the work can be attributed to the Maestro della Madonna Lazzaroni, a Florentine painter whose name is otherwise unknown but who is known for his gable-topped Madonna altarpieces. Iconographically, the work on offer is a so-called *Maestà*, a type of Marian image in which the Virgin Mary is enthroned in the center of the composition with the infant Jesus, usually surrounded by angels, city or church saints, and figures of donors at her feet. The Maestà style was significantly influenced by the painter Duccio di Buoninsegna in Siena and enjoyed great popularity, particularly in 14th-century Tuscany.
