Rare lighter from the Consuls’ collection, with a single-pronged brass guard, straight crossbar, and a curved quillon ending in a flat knob; stamped on the top of the bar: “BOUTET” and two rectangular hallmarks: “L D” and “A B”; oval cap with a small tail, leather-covered shaft with filigree detailing, ending in a beaded brass ring; very slightly curved blade, Montmorency type, length 67.8 cm; leather scabbard with two brass fittings; total length 82.5 cm. (The leather is period, but the fittings have been replaced). Consulate period. Good condition. The original tangs were covered with compressed leather, patterned to imitate ebony, but this very fragile material has not aged well; many tangs were modified and fitted with leather, filigree-decorated, likely during the early Empire period.
