Diehl Ch. - Tourneau M. - Saladin H.: Les Monuments Chretiens de Salonique. Paris, 1918 First edition. ROYAL FOLIO, text volume unbound, in original publishers paper covers upper cover missing, some edges of pages frayed, back cover of paperboard slightly rubbed, text clean and complete 260p. including many illustrations (mostly photographs), without the separately published portfolio of further plates. Overall a very good copy. After the liberation of Thessaloniki in 1913 a team of French Byzantinist started to study, for the first time, its Christian Byzantine monuments and discovered their hidden treasures. As some of them perished during the great fire of 1917, this publication is the only available source for them. Especially for many fine mosaics of St Demetrius Church, almost completely destroyed in 1917, these representations are the only surviving example and the photos and designs of St Demetrius in this publication were the only available source for the reconstruction of the church. It includes unique views and photographs of most of Thessaloniki’s Christian monuments and forms one of the best collections ever published for Thessaloniki. This scientific publication had a very limited print run and it is AN IMPRESSIVE WORK.
