N. KONDAKOV - I. TOLSTOI - S. REINACH: ANTIQUITES DE LA RUSSIE MERIDIONALE. PARIS, 1891 First edition in French, in FOLIO, contemporary leather over marble boards, complete, {4}, 555p. and 476 illustrations, text clean and bright, in very good condition. A foundational work for the study of the ancient Greek presence in the northern coastline of the Black sea and the influence of Greeks among local populations. A joint work by three leading archaeologists of their time, two Russians and a French, who spent several decades exploring the ancient Greek cities of that area .It covers more than half a century discoveries in several Greek cities and create the first coherent story of the Greek presence in that area featuring Scythian gold, Sarmatian artifacts, Greek colonial art from the wide Pontic region and early Byzantine influence. It provides extensive documentation of the unique cultural fusion known as Greco-Scythian art and before the turmoil of the 20th century Kondakov recorded inscriptions, architectural remains, coins discovered and all related information that transform this publication in the first major window into the Euxine Greeks, a prosperous Hellenic civilization during more than two millennia that were still in their lands at the time of the publication in the late 19th century. An impressive Folio richly illustrated and a landmark work for the Pontic Greeks.
