Paris François Edmont: Souvenirs de Jerusalem/Album dessiné par le Contre Admiral Paris et lithographie par MM.H. Clerget, Bachelier, Gaildreau et Fichot. Paris, [1862] First and only edition. ELEPHANT FOLIO 64x49cm. Contemporary leather over boards.Boards rubbed, down edge of spine missing, internally clean and bright. Complete, title, two pages of text (notes historique, explication des planches) and 14 fine lithographed plates (12 contemporary hand colored). Overall a very good copy of one of the best illustrated works of the 19th century for the Levant. Admiral Paris visited Jerusalem in 1861, head of the French squadron of the Levant. This book is famous for the quality of its twelve hand colored plates, including the Mosque of Omar, the El-Aqsa Mosque and the Christian churches of St Sepulche, of St Helene, of the Greek Chapel etc.. Paris had taken part in many travel explorations. Before publishing the Souvenirs de Jerusalem, he had already published two other important Folios on naval and maritime architecture. The notes historiques provide a rich and fascinating complement to the plates, providing not only the historical references of the monuments displayed, but also the author’ s impressions as a visitor. RARE AND IMPRESSIVE. References: Blackmer 1255, not in Atabey
