AMI BOUE: Recueil d'Itinéraires dans la Turquie d' Europe, details géographiques, topographiques et statistiques sur cet Empire. Vienne, 1854 First edition. In 4to, the original publisher’s paper covers, very slightly frayed at edges and at the spine of the second volume, cover lightly dusty. Two volumes complete: half-titles, 352 p. [1], 345 p. Text clean and bright, partly unopened, a fresh “as published” set. Overall in very good plus condition. Ami Boué travelled extensively in the Balkans during the late 1830s, with particular focus on Macedonia and Thrace. He published his comprehensive account of discoveries in 1840 (Atabey 141), but his detailed travel itineraries were left unpublished until this edition. This work contains his extremely precise day-to-day itineraries, offering unique information on ancient and contemporary routes across Macedonia and Thrace, just before the arrival of railways and modern roads would irrevocably alter Balkan travel. Boué provides astonishing detail on people, villages, landscapes, ethnological composition, trade routes, and commercial trends throughout European Turkey. Not in Atabey, Blackmer, or any other major collection. A very rare work, here in unusually fresh condition.
