ETIENNE REY: VOYAGE PITTORESQUE EN GRÈCE ET DANS LE LEVANT. LYON, 1867 First edition, IMPERIAL FOLIO, two volumes in one, contemporary fine leather over boards, complete 148 p., 3 engraved maps, 52 lithographed plates and 42 lithographed illustrations in text, text and plates clean and bright, overall in very good plus condition, a lovely copy. Rey accounts of a joint travel with Chenavard to Greece and Asia Minor in 1843-1844. The plates include fine views of Athens and several other places around Greece (Chaliks,Livadia,Patras,Ithaki etc). According to Blackmer: Rey's lithographs are more interesting than Chenavard engravings, because Chenavard architectural training led him to produce more architectural studies of ancient buildings. Rey's eyes produced views of a lively nature reflecting modern life in Greece and the Greek capital. Rey, who approached Greece with the soul of a landscape painter, spent twenty years preparing his book. An impressive work very richly illustrated. References: Blackmer 1412, Atabey 1037
