GEORG LUDWIG von MAURER: Das Griechische Volk in Offentlicher, Kirchlicher und Privat-Rechtlicher Beziehung vor und nach dem Freiheitskampfe bis zum 31 Juli 1834. Heidelberg, 1835 First edition. In 8vo, contemporary decorated leather over boards, edges slightly trimmed, an attractive binding, text with some scattered foxing and spotting. Complete in three volumes: [20], 596 p.; [12], 540 p.,[2] 849p. Overall in very good condition. A monumental work on Greek history, society, and customs of the early 19th century. Von Maurer (1790-1872) was chosen in 1832 as a member of the Regency Council (Αντιβασιλεία) during the minority of Othon. He was an ardent Philhellene and applied himself energetically to the task of creating institutions adapted to the requirements of a modern civilized community for the new state, but grave difficulties arose from internal opposition, and he was recalled to Munich in 1834. This loss was a serious one for Greece. Soon after his return, he published this account, a highly valuable source for the first years of Greece as an independent state. A unique source for the customs of the Greek people at the very beginning of the new State. Maurer accounts were very accurate. An imposing work, absent from all relevant collections.
