JULIUS MILLINGEN: MEMOIRS OF THE AFFAIRS OF GREECE CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF THE MILITARY AND POLITICAL EVENTS WHICH OCCURRED IN 1823 AND FOLLOWING YEARS WITH VARIOUS ANECDOTES RELATING TO LORD BYRON AND AN ACCOUNT OF HIS LAST ILLNESS AND DEATH. LONDON, 1831 First edition, in 8vo, later leather over boards, complete 338p., edges marbled, in almost fine condition. Millingen, a devoted Philhellene, was a British physician who went to Greece in 1823 to offer his services in a professional capacity to the Revolutionary government. His plan came to nothing and opened a dispensary at Messolongi. There he attended Lord Byron in his last illness and testifies to Byron s many good qualities. An impressive account of a Philhellene who came to Greece to assist, confronted many obstacles and finally was the person who provided the most accurate account for Lord Byron's last days in Greece.
