D’ ANVILLE: L’ Empire Turc considéré dans son Établissement et dans ses Accroissements successifs. Paris, 1772 First and only edition, in 8vo, contemporary leather over boards, spine richly gilt, rear cover with minor wear. Text clean and bright. Complete: title [4], 138 p. Overall in very good plus condition. A presentation of the Ottoman Levant by the famous French geographer D’Anville, the leading French geographer of the 18th century. The work was published during the Russo-Turkish War of the early 1770s, when the possibility of a total collapse of the Ottoman Empire seemed very probable. D’ Anville, a Philhellene who produced many historic maps of the Greek world, wrote this treaty to expose the weakness of the Ottomans and of a possible rise of a new Greek state. A very rare work, one of the few accounts by D’Anville. References: Atabey 28, not in Blackmer
