ΑΝΝΩΝΟΣ: ΚΑΡΧΗΔΟΝΙΩΝ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΕΡΙΠΛΟΥΣ - [HANNON: EL PERIPLO ILLUSTRADO] in PEDRO RODRÍGUEZ DE CAMPOMANES: ANTIGÜEDAD MARÍTIMA DE LA REPÚBLICA DE CARTAGO CON EL PERIPLO DE SU GENERAL HANNON, TRADUCIDO DEL GRIEGO E ILUSTRADO. MADRID, 1756 First edition in Spanish ,third edition in the original Greek, in large 8vo, contemporary Spanish vellum richly illustrated with traditional 18th century Spanish decoration on upper cover , manuscript title in spine, a highly artistic contemporary Spanish binding slightly dusty, complete: {27},136p., 132p.,, {2} and two copper engraved maps, text clean and bright, in almost fine condition. One of the earliest written accounts of exploration. An Ancient Greek text preserving a Punic account of Hanno the Navigator, a Carthaginian King or admiral, who sailed out past Gibraltar down the west coast of Africa around the 5th century BC. Campomanes, an early Spanish Philhellene, entire work stands as an indirect tribute to the historical power of the Greek language. As the text demonstrates, the entire maritime memory of Carthage, Rome's greatest rival, was completely obliterated from history except for what the Greeks chose to translate to preserve. By including the original Greek text side by side with the Spanish translation, Campomanes highlighted that the Greek language was the ultimate, irreplaceable archive. Campomane's work is an early attempt to examine ancient maritime trade routes outside the Mediterranean. It is a landmark Spanish contribution in the 18th century Enlightenment's return to the Greek roots. The work includes a very rare Spanish drawn map of the area of Hannon periplus.
