ELLIS VERYARD: AN ACCOUNT OF DIVERS REMARKS. TAKEN IN A JOURNEY THROUGH... ITALY, SICILY… AS ALSO A VOYAGE TO THE LEVANT, A DESCRIPTION OF CANDIA, EGYPT.., ASIA MINOR, HELLESPONT, PROPONTIS AND CONSTANTINOPLE, THE ISLES OF THE CARPATHIAN, AEGEAN AND IONIAN SEAS… LONDON, 1701 First edition, FOLIO, contemporary full leather rebaked, cover with fine typical contemporary English decoration with light wear, text clean and bright, complete: title, [8], 360p. [22] and two plates as called for, overall in very good condition. Ellis Veryard (1657-1714), an English physician, travelled widely in Europe from 1682 to 1695. He set sail for the Levant in February 1686 in the turmoil of the Venetian campaigns in Greece. He provides a very early description of the Ottoman Crete and focuses on the devastation of the island, he had also visited Constantinople, mainland Greece and many islands of the Ionian and Aegean seas as well Cyprus. Veryard paid careful attention to the local religions, customs, manners and environment of the people he encountered. He documented everything, from local governance to regional proverbs and physical folklore. An early uncommon example of English travelogue to the Levant with fine accurate descriptions of many Greek areas. References: Blackmer 1727, Atabey 1285
