BEAUVEAU: RELATION JOURNALIÈRE DU VOYAGE DU LEVANT. NANCY, 1615 Second edition, but the first illustrated, in 4to, later leather over marbled boards, spine richly gilt, complete: title [4], 181p. and all the forty nine (49) beautiful copper engraved plates depicting many islands maps, cities and views across Greece, Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean, some isolated spots in some pages, one page with a tear in the text, title a little dusty, overall very few wear and in very good condition. The very first illustrated edition of one of the most important early 17th century European travelogues to the Levant. Beauveau, a French diplomat, began his journey in 1604. The work covers Greece, Cyprus and the Holy Land. It is a detailed account of the state of the Greek areas in the very early 17th century. All the maps have been originally drawn by the author, in the manner of Berteli and Camocio, and include most of the Greek islands and Cyprus (Zacharakis 247-264). They form a unique early Atlas of the Greek Archipelago of the utmost rarity. According to Sotheby's, this edition had appeared only four times in auction. References: Blackmer 106, Atabey 84.
