JEAN LONGNON: [LIVRE DE LA CONQUESTE DE LA PRINCÉE DE L’AMORÉE] - CHRONIQUE DE MORÉE (1204-1305). PARIS, 1911 First edition, large 4to, contemporary leather over marbled boards preserving publishers original paper covers, a very nice binding, complete 430 pages and one map, text clean and bright, in fine condition. First definitive scholarly edition of the famous Chronicle of Morea, the most important medieval source for 13th and 14th century Greece. The original French manuscript written around 1340-1350 had been discovered earlier by Buchon who used it extensively in his history of Frankish Morea but only Longnon, after extensive research, gave its first complete edition with this publication. Covers events in Greece from the late 12th century up to early 14th and it has been compiled by an anonymous French author who lived in Greece that time near Thiva. Almost a unique source for several crucial events in Greece provides a very vivid picture of the multinational society of that time describing distinct feudal laws and customs and acts as an historical narrative of how a French medieval state was transplanted onto Byzantine soil.
