230 - Japanese Tsugaru-nuri Lacquerware Box w/ Stand 20th century, Japanese Japanese Meiji lacquered box & stand Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Unknown, Japanese maker likely in the Aomori Prefecture in Northern Japan. Materials: Lacquered wood Marking(s): None Cataloguer's Note: Kara-nuri is incredibly labor-intensive. It requires applying many layers of colored lacquer (typically dark green, red, and yellow), allowing them to dry, and then manually sanding the surface completely smooth. This meticulous sanding cuts through the hidden, uneven layers to reveal a gorgeous, abstract pattern reminiscent of natural stone, starry skies, or leopard print. This specific set includes a main storage box accompanied by a custom matching presentation tray underneath. It is highly characteristic of historical Japanese document boxes (bunko), tea storage vessels (chahe), or high-end keepsake containers. (On stand) H 3.25" x W (stand) 7.75" x W (box) 6" Good vintage condition. One chip in wood on box near rim and minor splintering in wooden base of box.
