VERLAINE (Paul). *Parallèlement*. Paris, Imprimerie nationale, Ambroise Vollard, 1900. In-4, burgundy morocco leather, binding frame decorated with a set of four gilt fillets framed by a triple blind-stamped fillet, the whole surrounded by a gilt fillet, spine decorated with fillets in the same style; this framing is repeated on the orange morocco lining; orange morocco endpapers; edges gilt on endpapers; cover and spine; half-moroquin slipcase; case (P.-L. Martin, 1949). One of the masterpieces of the illustrated book and the first book published by Ambroise Vollard. It is adorned with a frontispiece and 108 lithographs by Pierre Bonnard—including 21 full-page prints—printed in pink and harmonizing with Verlaine’s prose in a sophisticated yet free-flowing layout, as well as 9 black woodcuts engraved by Tony Beltrand. Printed in an edition of 200 copies, including 30 “chine” copies. First-printing copy on Dutch vellum, bearing the mark of the Imprimerie nationale, which was later replaced by a vignette by Bonnard to avoid associating the effigy of the Republic with a book deemed licentious. Perfect binding by Pierre-Lucien Martin. From the François Ragazzoni Library (III, 2003, no. 323). Appraiser: Mr. Dominique Courvoisier
