First edition, featuring a frontispiece and 9 beautiful double-page plates engraved on copper by Piranesi. (Focillon, nos. 480–491.) Description of the emissario del lago Albano (the Albano outlet), an underground tunnel bored through volcanic rock in the 4th century B.C. to supply water to the countryside around Rome: this hydraulic engineering project was one of the very first in the history of Rome. Small pinholes on the edges, slight foxing along the margins of the plates, three small tears repaired on the first two plates.
