MANESSON-MALLET (Allain). Description of the Universe, containing the various systems of the world, as well as general and detailed maps of ancient and modern geography. Paris, Denys Thierry, 1683. 5 volumes in-8, brown calfskin, decorated spine, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). First edition of this comprehensive work on the geographical knowledge of the time. Abundant engravings in intaglio, including 5 frontispiece titles, a portrait of the author, a portrait of King Louis XIV, approximately 670 full-page figures, maps, plans, and views within the text, and 12 (out of 14) plates. Volume I is devoted to systems of geography; the others are devoted to the various continents. Of particular note in Volume V are a map of Virginia and one of the Island of California. Manesson-Mallet (1630–1706), a French mathematics teacher, geographer, and cartographer, was also a military engineer specializing in siege warfare; in 1671, he published his *Travaux de Mars*. (Brunet, vol. III, col. 1343; Sabin, no. 44130.) Engraved coat-of-arms bookplate (featuring a gold chevron accompanied by three birds) of unknown origin (see OHR, pl. 323). A fine copy in a period binding. Two plates are missing from Volume III, which are part of the *Additions de l'Afrique*. Minor flaws: three worn cap edges and rubbed or damaged corners. Appraiser: Mr. Dominique Courvoisier
