OVID. *Metamorphoses*. Or: A Wonderful and Strange Description of Humans, Animals, and Other Creatures… Frankfurt am Main, Johann Gaurn, 1609. In-4, rigid vellum overbound (contemporary binding). A lovely Gothic edition printed in two columns, with the title printed in red and black and set within a woodcut frame, illustrated with numerous woodcut vignettes throughout the text. The translation, by Georg Wickram of Colmar, was first published in 1545 in Mainz. Scorched paper, as was often the case with books from across the Rhine during this period. Minor worm damage in the lower margin of the last two leaves and on the facing inside front cover. The endpapers are missing; there is a tear in the spine; the upper hinge is partially split, with one rib attachment severed. Expert: Mr. Dominique Courvoisier
