BIBLE. The Holy Bible. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1554. 3 parts in a sturdy folio volume, red long-grain morocco leather, double border of gilt fillets joined at the corners, fleurons at the inner corners, large cartouche with interlaced design and a gilt medallion in the center, decorated spine, gilt edges, traces of a silk ribbon (17th-century Dutch binding). A Protestant Bible in the Olivetan translation revised by Calvin and the pastors of Geneva, illustrated with numerous woodcuts, including 181 from the series of historical “Quadrins” drawn by Bernard Salomon, known as “Le Petit Bernard.” This is one of the finest works by the printer Jean de Tournes. (Brun, p. 127; Cartier, no. 266.) From the Édouard Rahir Library (II, 1931, no. 399). Two leaves are missing (pp. 243–244 and 249–250), a defect already noted in the Rahir sale catalog. Spine faded and warped; leather peeling at the edges of the lower back cover. Appraiser: Mr. Dominique Courvoisier
