MEDICI (FRANCESCO DE, 1541–1587, 2nd Grand Duke of Tuscany). Autograph letter signed “Principe de Fiorenza di Siena,” addressed to Giulio de’ Medici in Arezzo, Florence, July 4, 1564, in Italian, approving his plan for a supervisory or inspection tour of the “lavori,” offering him advice on the preservation of grain reserves in all the fortresses, and recommending that he clear out and replenish the stocks of salted meat as he had done in previous years. Ink on paper, one page, in-4°, with complete address page, paper seal. Francesco, the eldest son of Cosimo de’ Medici, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany (1519–1574), had officially assumed most of his father’s power in May 1564, when Cosimo, overwhelmed by the deaths of two other sons, had effectively abdicated in his favor. Gulio, Cosimo’s illegitimate cousin, was the son of Lorenzino de’ Medici, who was assassinated in 1548.
