George III fireplace mantelpiece, carved, molded, and painted white, with matching bronze fittings. The design draws on the classical repertoire associated with Adam’s designs. Its architectural structure consists of a stepped horizontal mantelpiece with dentil moldings, fillets, and an egg-and-dart band. It rests on two lateral uprights arranged as pilasters with fluted shafts, composite capitals, and rectangular bases. The uprights incorporate vertical panels featuring vegetal reliefs, carved within rectangular recesses and extended by fluting. The frieze is divided into three sections: two fluted side panels and a molded central tablet decorated with a floral garland suspended from ribbons or rosettes. England, c. 1780–1800.
