Théodore ROUSSEAU (1812–1867) The Fallen Tree in the Marshes of Tiffauges OIL ON CARDBOARD (signs of wear and restoration) Signed lower left, annotated on the reverse: “Théodore Rousseau, Tiffauges Marshes, Vendée, Count Bayon’s collection, sold in 1868 in Roubaix.” 37.5 x 45.5 cm This work is accompanied by a certificate from Michel Schulman dated September 14, 2026, identifying the painting as *Forest Edge* and dating it to 1855–60. Bibliography: Rolande and Pierre Miquel, *Théodore Rousseau*, Somogy Editions d’Art, 2010, describes it on p. 56 under the title *L’arbre abattu dans les marais de Tiffauges* with the date 1837. A detail is reproduced in full color on a full page on p. 55. Rolande and Pierre Miquel specify: “Executed in the company of Charles Leroux.” Background: Deeply affected by his mother’s death in 1837, Rousseau was invited to stay with the family of his friend Charles Leroux, who accompanied him everywhere, notably to the Vendée. A notice of inclusion by Brame and Lorenceau, dated July 3, 2025, accompanies the painting and repeats Pierre Miquel’s title and date but specifies “in collaboration with Charles Leroux.” Condition Report l Original mount in fairly good condition with minor losses and wear at the corners. Paint layer in fairly good condition with signs of wear. Oblique light: no visible lifting. Wood’s lamp: previous restorations, particularly in the foliage and toward the bottom of the painting; some are barely visible due to an old opaque varnish. The light areas of the painting were stripped of varnish to a greater extent in the past. Appraiser: Maket Gallery Lot viewable by appointment only at the appraiser’s office
