373 - A Keitai Butsu (Portable Buddhist Shrine) with the Twin Dainichi Nyorai In the form of a miniature two-panel zushi, each leaf carved and gilt with a seated figure of Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来, Mahāvairocana), the cosmic Buddha of Esoteric Buddhism, seated upon a lotus throne before a radiating gilt halo. The two figures, identical in dress and ornament, are distinguished by their hand gestures — one in chiken-in, the knowledge-fist mudra, representing Dainichi of the Kongōkai (Diamond World), the other in hokkai jō-in, the meditation mudra, representing Dainichi of the Taizōkai (Womb World) — together forming the twin mandalas fundamental to Shingon Buddhist cosmology. The exterior finished in roiro, a deep polished black lacquer, the clasp and hinge worked in chased silver, the clasp pierced and modelled in relief with prunus blossom amid foliage beside an upright bamboo-form catch, closing the two leaves securely for travel. W: 13.3cm H: 10.7cm Wooden box Japan
