Namiki Tsunenobu i(Japan Tokyo,1949- ) Namiki Tsunenobu, a lacquer painting entitled 'Yūkei' (Evening Scene) Namiki Tsunenobu was born in Tokyo in Shōwa 24 (1949) and graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. In his lacquer art, traditional materials — mother-of-pearl, eggshell, and coloured lacquer — are used to capture the emotion of a single instant frozen in the flow of time. In that captured moment, no wind stirs, no air moves — and yet, within that same instant, one senses the wind beginning to flow, a kingfisher taking flight, the moon veiled by passing clouds, and cherry blossoms scattering to the ground. For an artist who came to lacquer art by way of design, this mode of expression was, perhaps, the ideal fit. His work is held in such collections as Tokyo University of the Arts, the National Crafts Museum, Ise Grand Shrine, and Yakushi-ji Temple. P50 Japan
