A Ge ware water pot A water washer (xi) of Ge ware, one of the celebrated Five Great Kilns of the Song dynasty. A thick glaze of gentle greyish-blue tone covers the vessel, its entire surface traversed by the fine crackle produced by differential contraction during firing. Larger and smaller fissures interweave in a complex web — the pattern known as "gold threads and iron wires" (jīnsī tiěxiàn), the hallmark of Ge ware at its most characteristic.
